Eventually after a few minutes the friction will release, and the clock should begin to work on its own. The small indicator hand will be pointing to a number on the disk at which the clock was regulated before leaving the factory. Should you find it necessary to regulate the clock, observe the number to which the indicator hand points. By so doing, you will avoid damage to the delicate suspension wire while turning the regulating disk. Keep A Regulation Record: Keeping a short Record of regulation and maintenance on your clock will make it much easier for you to keep it well with in its optimum time-keeping ability. We have found that using the guideline below helps. Times of regulation will include any time the clock has exceeded a 3 to 5 minute error. Use only ONE form of time references for this, a QUARTZ clock that is known for keeping good time is recommended. Over time you may find the clock needs only slight regulation; for example, if it has run for approximately 3 weeks and the error rate is under 3 minutes adjust regulator only slightly or simply RE-set. TEMPERATURE and SEASONAL CHANGES Temperature fluctuation can affect the time-keeping abilities of your clock. Never allow direct sun light to come in contact with your clock. This is because 1 minute is very difficult to observe and calculate effectively. One little known fact about the Rotating Regulator: After the clock is restarted it can take up to 3 or 4 hours for the pendulum to settle down into regular beat rate. At first I didn't understand your question about the strike. They are in the two holes on in the face of the clock. The are for winding the mainsprings that power the clock. One is for the time and the other is for the strike. Over ninety-nine percent of clocks with two winding arbors are as I stated. However, the Centurion has the winding arbor for the strike on the right and the one for the time is on the left. You fully wind both of them once a month. They are wound until they become very tight. Wind carefully and firmly. All mainspring clocks can slip if you don't hold the clock and key firmly while winding, especially the springs on the Asian clocks. A verge that is pushed or bent effects the escapement of the clock; the escapement being that part of the clock that actually creates the tick and tock sound.
By bending or pushing this verge back into position, and then listening to the sound, you can make the clock go tick tock, tick tock rather than tock tick, tock tick or ticktock ticktock which means the clock is in beat. This method is the same for most mantle clocks, kitchen clocks, grandmother clocks, and grandfather clocks. Just about all pendulum clocks are this way except for the 400 Day clock or the Atmos, which are entirely different timepieces. Clock is ticking OK but stops If the clock is now in beat, meaning the tick and the tock are evenly spaced, but then the clock stops after awhile, what now. Here are some other common ailments that are meant to be looked into before going into a cleaning procedure. Are the hands touching the dial, or each other. Bend the hands so they do not touch. Is the pendulum touching another object during its swing. The Weight Driven Clocks pendulum cannot touch anything during its swing. It is commonly found in mantle clocks that the wrong pendulum bob has been put on the clock. Bobs are lost frequently like clock keys. If someone decides to replace the bob but hooks on a fatter one then the original, it may bump into the movement during its swing, even though the clock is level. Being off level is the most common reason for the pendulum to be blocked during its swing. If a clock is not level side to side and front to back, (or close) the bob may hit the case. It depends on the clock. All clocks are meant to be level and in beat from side to side, but not all clocks are meant to be perfectly level from front to back. The point is, to keep the pendulum totally free from obstructions because it uses its own weight and momentum to help keep the clock running. If it bumps anything, even slightly, then it loses some momentum and the clock will eventually stop. If these things do not fix the clock then it would be safe to assume there is a general lack of power in the time train.
It is time to give the Spring Driven Clocks clock a good cleaning and check it over for excessive wear. If the old oil dried up, then this would cause too much friction for the clock to run with the weights power. Clean out the old oil and check for excessive wear at the pivot holes. Pivot holes are explained in another section. To get to this point means it is time to look for a New Spring Driven Clocks Movement. Unless you find clocks as interesting as I do, then the time required to overhaul the movement is not worth it when you can get a New Movement, improved by the factory with bronze bushings, which will be more cost effective. It can be much more expensive to overhaul a movement because of the extensive time it takes to disassemble the movement, work on it, and then put it all back together again. Forget about the movement being sentimental when it comes to replacing it, keep the case sentimental, not the Weight Driven Clocks movement. If the movement is on our charts, then it is best to replace it. No tick tock sound? If you do not hear any tick tock from a Spring Driven Clocks mechanical clock, even if the verge is moved back and forth by hand, this means there is a big obstruction in the way of the mechanics of the movement. This could mean any of the following: 1. The hands are touching something, bend the hands to freedom. 2. The Spring Driven Clocks chiming mechanics are out of synchronization and they are doing something to stop the movement. If the chime mechanics seems to be your clocks situation, it is recommended to read up on these parts with our E-Book. NOTE: There are only two general methods that a Spring Driven Clocks synchronizes the chime with what hour it is, these two methods are called Rack and Snail or Count Wheel. Both of these involve many interactions between the arms inside the movement (The arms are in the front of the movement in a rack and snail style movement). Rack and Snail movement 3.

Introduced as a big and highly detailed single engine demonstration rocket, the Orion used parts from the Saturn 1B and Saturn V kits to give it the look of a futuristic NASA interplanetary exploration rocket. Like the original from which this model is based, it has a balsa nose cone and six balsa pod cones. All the nose cones are balsa like the original version. In a span of about five years, the largest regularly made production motors available reached N, which had the equivalent power of over 1,000 D engines combined, and could lift rockets weighing 50 kg (110 lb) with ease. Since the early 1960s, a copy of the Model Rocket Safety Code has been provided with most model rocket kits and motors.In 1591 a Belgian, Jean Beavie, described and sketched the important idea of multistage rockets, or rockets consisting of multiple stages, each igniting after the one below was depleted and decoupled. But then Orville read articles written in Popular Mechanics by G. Harry Stine about the safety problems associated with young people trying to make their own rocket engines. With the launch of Sputnik, many young people were trying to build their own rocket motors, often with tragic results. They sent samples to Mr. Stine in January 1957. Stine, a range safety officer at White Sands Missile Range, built and flew the models, and then devised a safety handbook for the activity based on his experience at the range.Stine had model rocket engines made by a local fireworks company recommended by Carlisle, but reliability and delivery problems forced Stine to approach others. Stine eventually approached Vernon Estes, the son of a local fireworks maker. This is slightly different from tumble recovery, which relies on some system to destabilize the rocket to prevent it from entering a ballistic trajectory on its way back to Earth.Any rocket that will enter a stable, ballistic trajectory as it falls is not safe to use with tumble recovery. To prevent this, some such rockets use the ejection charge to slide the engine to the rear of the rocket, moving the center of mass behind the center of pressure and thus making the rocket unstable.This is where the ejection charge of the motor ejects the nose cone of the rocket (usually attached by a shock cord made of rubber, Kevlar string or another type of cord) from the body tube, destroying the rocket's aerodynamic profile, causing highly increased drag, and reducing the rocket's airspeed to a safe rate for landing. Nose-blow recovery is generally only suitable for very light rockets.It uses the ejective force of the motor to deploy, or push out, the parachute or streamer. The parachute is attached to the body either directly, by means of a ripcord, or indirectly, when it's attached to the nose cone, which attached to the body by a ripcord. Typically, a ball or mass of fireproof paper or material is inserted into the body before the parachute or streamer. This allows the ejection charge to propel the fire-proof material, parachute, and nose cone without damaging the recovery equipment. Air resistance slows the rocket's fall, ending in a smooth, controlled and gentle landing.These are termed 'backsliders'.The helicopter recovery usually happens when the engine's recoil creates pressure, making the nose cone pop out. There are rubber bands connected to the nosecone and three or more blades. The rubber bands pull the blades out and they provide enough drag to soften the landing. In some rockets, the fins are used as the blades as well. In these, the ejection charge pushes a tube inside that has tabs sticking out of the rocket that hold the fins during launch.

Microprocessor controllers can also be used. However, the rocket's speed and motion can lead to blurry photographs, and quickly changing lighting conditions as the rocket points from ground to sky can affect video quality. Video frames can also be stitched together to create panoramas. As parachute systems can be prone to failure or malfunction, model rocket cameras need to be protected from impact with the ground.There are two widely used ones used on the market, both produced by Estes: the Astrovision and the Oracle. The Astrocam shoots 4 (advertised as 16, and shown when playing the video, but in real life 4) seconds of video, and can also take three consecutive digital still images in flight, with a higher resolution than the video. It takes from size B6-3 to C6-3 Engines. The Oracle is a more costly alternative, but is able to capture all or most of its flight and recovery. The Oracle has been on the market longer than the Astrovision, and has a better general reputation.One is to radio the signal down to earth, like in the BoosterVision series of cameras. The second method for this is to record it on board and be downloaded after recovery, the method employed by the cameras above (some experimenters use the Aiptek PenCam Mega for this, the lowest power usable with this method is a C or D Motor).Two methods of determining these quantities are to a) have an accelerometer and a timer and work backwards from the acceleration to the speed and then to the height and b) to have a barometer on board with a timer and to get the height (from the difference of the pressure on the ground to the pressure in the air) and to work forwards with the time of the measurements to the speed and acceleration.
Electric Igniter These fractures increase the surface area of the propellant, so that when the motor is ignited, the propellant burns much faster and produces greater than normal internal chamber pressure inside the engine. This pressure may exceed the strength of the paper case and cause the motor to burst. A bursting motor can cause damage to the model rocket ranging from a simple ruptured motor tube or body tube to the violent ejection (and occasionally ignition) of the recovery system.This type of propellant is similar to that used in the solid rocket boosters of the space shuttle and is not as fragile as black powder, increasing motor reliability and resistance to fractures in the propellant. These motors These are commercially produced motors requiring the user to assemble propellant grains, o-rings and washers (to contain the expanding gases), delay grains and ejection charges into special non-shattering aluminum motor casings with screw-on or snap-in ends (closures). The advantage of a reloadable motor is the cost: firstly, because the main casing is reusable, reloads cost significantly less than single-use motors of the same impulse. Secondly, assembly of larger composite engines is labor-intensive and difficult to automate; off-loading this task on the consumer results in a cost savings. Reloadable motors are available from D through O class.On top of the propellant is a tracking delay charge, which produces smoke but in essence no thrust, as the rocket slows down and arcs over. When the delay charge has burned through, it ignites an ejection charge, which is used to deploy the recovery system.Black powder rocket motors are only commonly produced up to Class E. Each class's upper limit is double the upper limit of the previous class.The company Apogee Components made 10.5mm micro motors, but those were discontinued in 2001.
Larger C, D, and E class black-powder motors are also available; they are 24 mm in diameter and either 70 (C and D motors) or 95 mm long (E motors). Some motors, such as F and G single-use motors, are 29mm in diameter. High-power motors (usually reloadable) are available in 38mm, 54mm, 75mm, and 98mm diameters.Each letter in successive alphabetical order has up to twice the impulse of the letter preceding it.A higher thrust will result in higher liftoff acceleration, and can be used to launch a heavier model. Within the same letter class, a higher average thrust also implies a shorter burn time (e.g., a B6 motor will not burn as long as - but will have more initial thrust than - a B4). Motors within the same letter class that have different first numbers are usually for rockets with different weights. For example, a heavier rocket would require an engine with more initial thrust to get it off of the launch pad, whereas a lighter rocket would need less initial thrust and would sustain a longer burn, reaching higher altitudes.Black Powder Motors that end in a zero have no delay or ejection charge. Such motors are typically used as first-stage motors in multistage rockets as the lack of delay element and cap permit burning material to burst forward and ignite an upper-stage motor. In this case, there is no ejection charge, but a cap is in place. Plugged motors are also used in larger rockets, where electronic altimeters or timers are used to trigger the deployment of the recovery system.After that, there is a series of letters indicating the propellant type. However, not all companies that produce reloadable motor systems use the same designations for their motors.The most common recovery methods are parachute and streamer. The parachute is usually blown out by the engine's ejection charge, which pops off the nose cone. The parachute is attached to the nose cone, making it pull the parachute out and make a soft landing.

Both Centuri and MPC beat Estes to the 13mm motor market by over a year but the Estes motor was the smallest and lightest and came to dominate the mini-motor arena. Talk of a re-usable follow-on to the Saturn launch vehicles was hot and Estes capitalized on the concept with the year-old model and its showcase location on the catalog cover. Many consider this the peak of the Estes catalogs. You saw the actual model that you were going to buy (or wished to). This was essentially a reprint of Cat. No 721 with a different cover and an eight or twelve page center bound-in insert. There were two versions of this release of the catalog. One had an eight page insert which featured the new products released after the first 1971 catalog including the Mini Brute motors and models and the Transroc transmitter. This catalog was bound on its short edge rather than the traditional long edge. As a result, the catalog had a cover that was of a paper weight only slightly heavier than the interior pages. The 1973 catalog more or less established the standard for almost all Estes catalogs that followed to this very day both in format and general style. Many think that the cover artist had the 1971 Centuri catalog cover in mind when creating this cover. Also included in this catalog was the new Estes Aerospace Club (EAC) which continued Estes' dedication to trying to stay one-on-one with up and coming model rocketeers.
The catalog marked the entry of Estes into hitching on to popular TV and Movie franchises and franchise-themed model offerings. The hobby of model rocketry was rapidly shrinking and the Star Trek theme was hoped to slow the slide. The the Klingon Battlecruiser and Starship Enterprise were probably the most challenging of flying rocket designs to pull off and Estes adoped lightweigh vacuforming as the way to do it. Nike-X, Renegade, Andromeda, Mars Snooper II, Russian Vostok, Maxi-Honest John were the only other new kits and the Cold-Power models were relegated to the back of the catalog. The Space Shuttle was all the rage and the first flights of the Shuttle Enterprise came shortly after the catalog's release. The catalog was on the grow again. The Starlab was a new kit featured on the cover but perhaps the most exciting kit was the scale LTV Scout that carried on in the tradition of Sandhawk from 7 years earlier. Star Wars was the big thing in 1978 and was another opportunity for Estes to capitalize on a popular franchise. Franchise mania was prevalent at Estes as the decade wound down and the hobby begain regaining momentum. Star Trek, Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica all had places in the new Estes lineup. Battlestar Galactica was the newest with the announcement of the Colonial Viper and the never-released Cylon Raider. Somehow the Laser Torpedo (and old generic standby) became associated with the Galactica line. Perhaps the most relevant and exciting develpment was the introduction of the AstroCam 110 which graced the cover. After the disappearance of the Camroc and Cineroc aerial cameras in 1976 the AstroCam was a welcomed and popular addition for the rocketeer (the AstroCam would come and go in various incarnations for the nex 30 years). Other new kits were Polaris, Gamma, Kadet, Eclipse, Stiletto, Delta Star, Colossus, Maxi Alpha 3, Starship Vega (an updated release from the Citation line of almost 10 years previous), Multi Roc and the AstroCam Delta II.
Notable additions to the catalog were the Little Joe II, Trident, Drifter, and Starlight models.Featured a Saturn 1 liftoff along with an inset of the new Estes Saturn IB. Otherwise, this catalog was a virtual clone of the 1966 version with refinements and a slightly expanded product line.Challenged by Centuri's introduction of high quality small format catalogs, Estes went all out to produce a colorful, informative, and incredibly complete publication that set the standards for all to follow.from any company. The cover featured full-color commissioned artwork of the (by now) famous Mars Snooper. Originally intended as a 1965 release, long graphics production times led to the release of this catalog as a 1966 volume. The famed original Estes Logo made its first appearance in this catalog. Still, the catalog number of this catalog was 651 which indicates its 1965 roots. There was no 1965 catalog from Estes. Continue the line around the casing. Cut with a razor saw. Sand the ends square with a sanding block and 220 grit sandpaper. Take a used 18mm casing, knock out the nozzle and burnt debris. Depending on the engine power (A, B or C) the inside diameter of the casing may differ. Sand the inside of the 18mm casing until the 13mm engine slides in easier. Friction fit the smaller engine in the adapter with masking tape. Try fitting an A, B or C sized engine into a used D sized motor casing. You won’t be able to make an airfoiled fin or round the outside and trailing edges. But the leading edge ends up rounded. The outside and trailing edges will be square. Cut the boxes into “flats”, saving the biggest pieces, the front and back of the boxes. Sand the printed side of the cardboard (use 220 grit) to remove some of the ink and gloss finish. This will help the glue adhere better. Trace it onto the 110 lb. stock. Flip it over, matching up the leading edge. Leave a little space along that leading edge line to allow for the fold over the cardboard inside the laminate skin.
Fold the fin on the leading edge. At this point, the fin overlay might remind you of a butterfly wing. Two opposite, matching halves folded in the middle. The leading edge should be cut against a straight edge. Use a glue stick to apply a thin coating of glue on one side of the 110 lb. overlay. Lay the leading edge of t he interior cereal box piece up to the fold in the overlay piece. Press evenly over the entire fin half. Lay a light glue coating over the other half of the overlay and fold it over onto the cereal box. You will now have a three layer fin. The oversize cereal box board will be sticking out beyond the overlay edges. Use wax paper on either side of the fin so it won’t stick to the book’s pages. Take the dried fins from the book and trim around edges of the overlay. The rounded, folded leading edge won’t need the glue. You can buy a bale at Home Depot or Lowe’s in the home insulation department. It’s cheap, biodegradable and a single bale could last for years. When using Dog Barf, I pack my rockets with 2x the body diameter. You can buy flat crepe sheets online or at some party stores. Cuts at the folds to make “packable” sized squares. The design incorporates centering rings with offset holes in them. They are glued to a (vented) cone shaped centerpiece. Simple, well designed and lightweight. The largest baffle they make is based on the older Centuri design. Most commercially made parachute canopies are 1 mil. or thicker. For shroud lines, look for thick rug or button thread at fabric stores. You can find them nearby the snap swivels in the fishing department of a sporting goods store. You can also use lead shot or BBs for a BB gun. Drop in a few weights and drip some epoxy glue (over the weights) inside the nose cone tip. The Estes “BT-20 and BT-50” tube walls are thinner, nowhere near as strong. The thicker walled tubing is less likely to dent, crimp and buckle. The thicker ST tubing is great for sport models.

However, if you are uncomfortable preforming this service procedure, have your dealer maintain the generator's valve clearance at the intervals specified. For example, if you are adding two electrical devices, plug one into a red outlet and the other into a blue outlet rather than two red or two blue outlets. This will help balance the loads on the generator. NOTE: This only applies to models with extension cords. However, portable generators are intended to be used during extreme weather and for the sensitive electronics on them, it is best if some sort of open covering can be used to protect it from direct rain or snow. Following the fuel stabilizer manufacturer's recommendations, treat the quantity of the fuel remaining in the fuel tank. Open the fuel valve, start and operate the engine for 30 minutes. Close the fuel valve and operate until the engine stops. This circulates treated fuel through lines and carburetor. The fuel can be drained or left in the tank. Aftermarket conversion kits are available on the internet. However, if a customer decides to convert the fuel using an aftermarket kit, the warranty is void. Never use an E85 fuel or a mixture of oil and gasoline designated for two cycle engines. Utilizing a higher grade premium fuel will not yield any increase in power output or improved performance. Air space is required to allow for expansion of the gasoline during warmer temperatures. So the actual amount of gasoline that will fit in the tank is typically less than the stated fuel tank capacity. The treated fuel can then be left in the tank. Fuel can be removed through the fill opening using an automotive style siphon. Exercise all appropriate cautions when handling fuel. After the service has been preformed, does anything need to be done to the hourmeter? This includes oil changes (at 100 hours) or air filter service (at 200 hours). As hours of operation continue to accumulate, the hourmeter will automatically reset itself until the next 100 or 200 hour service interval is reached. Introduction This document presents information about the monthly version of the CENTURY Model (Version 4.0). We will also present an overview about the status on the DAYCENT model which simulates plant-soil systems using a daily time step. The DAYCENT model is capable of simulating detailed daily soil water and temperature dynamics and trace gas fluxes (CH4, N2O, NOx and N2) which are not simulated in CENTURY Version 4.0. The CENTURY model is a generalized plant-soil ecosystem model that simulates plant production, soil carbon dynamics, soil nutrient dynamics, and soil water and temperature. The model has been used to simulate ecosystem dynamics for all of the major ecosystems in the world and has been used for the dominant cropland and agroecosystems. The model results have been compared to observed plant production, soil carbon, and soil nutrient data for the most common global natural and managed ecosystems. The model has been used to simulate the response of these ecosystems to changes in environmental driving variables (i.e. maximum and minimum air temperature, precipitation and atmospheric CO2 levels) and changes in the management practices (grazing intensity, forest clearing practices, burning frequency, fertilizer rates, crop cultivation practices, etc.
The decomposition rate of structural litter is also a function of the fraction of the structural material that is lignin (lower for higher fractions) and the lignin fraction of plant material is assumed to flow directly to slow SOM as plant structural material decomposes. The model also assumes that the fraction of the passive pool formed during the decomposition of active and slow SOM increases with clay content. The net effect of the soil texture controls on decomposition of active and slow SOM is to increase soil carbon stabilization for soils with low sand content and high clay content. A through description of the CENTURY SOM model and justification for the approach used in the model are presented by Parton et al. (1994). The CENTURY model has N (Figure 1-4) and P (Figure 1-5) pools that are analogous to all of the soil carbon pools. The amount of N and P flowing out of a particular pools is equal to the product of the carbon flow out of the pool and the carbon to the element ratio of the pool. A similar approach is used to calculate the flow of different elements into a specific pool but the carbon to element ratio of the receiving pool is a function of the labile inorganic mineral nutrient concentration. Low levels of available nutrients result in high C to element ratios for the different pools. Each pool has an allowable carbon to element ratio. The C:N ratios of the SOM pools are narrow (5-20) compared to the C:P ratios (100 to 400). Mineralization (release of nutrients from SOM) or immobilization of N and P (uptake of nutrients by SOM) occurs as a result of decomposition of dead plant material and the SOM 4 CENTURY Tutorial January 2001 fractions. Immobilization of nutrients into SOM generally occurs during the decomposition of structural plant material (high C:element ratio material), while mineralization of nutrients occurs as a result of decomposition of active and slow SOM (low C:element ratio material).
The nutrient content of structural material is quite low and nutrients are immobilized into microbial biomass during decomposition of structural material, while slow and active SOM have high nutrient contents and release nutrients (mineralize) while they are being decomposed. A complete description of the soil nutrient model is presented by Parton et al. Soil Water and Temperature Model The CENTURY model uses a simplified water budget model to calculate monthly bare soil evaporation, interception and transpiration water loss, stored soil water, snow water content, stream flow and saturated water flow between soil layers (Figure 1-6). Interception and bare soil water loss are calculated as fractions of the monthly precipitation and are subtracted from monthly precipitation before the water is added to the soil. Bare soil water loss is a function of aboveground biomass (decreasing with increasing biomass), while interception water loss increases with increasing aboveground biomass. Transpiration water increases as a function of live leaf biomass. Water loss occurs first as interception, followed by bare soil water loss and transpiration with the sum not exceeding the potential evapotranspiration (PET) water loss (PET is calculated as a function of maximum and minimum air temperature). Precipitation in excess of PET is stored in soil water layers by adding the water to the top layer. Near surface average soil temperature (STEMP) is used to calculate the abiotic decomposition rate and the temperature effect on plant growth. STEMP is calculated using equations where the maximum soil temperature is a function of maximum air temperature and the canopy biomass (lower for high biomass) and the minimum soil temperature is a function of minimum air temperature and canopy biomass (higher for high biomass).
The major input variables include: 1) monthly precipitation, 2) monthly average maximum and minimum air temperature, 3) soil texture, 4) lignin, N, S, and P content of plant material and 5) soil and atmospheric N inputs. This paper presents a description of the model, the method used to test and validate the model, and a summary of the application of the model for an environmental impact assessment. Figure 1-1 shows that the major structural components of the CENTURY model are the plant production, soil organic matter, and the soil water and temperature submodels. The plant production submodel calculates potential plant production and nutrient demand as a function of monthly average soil temperature and precipitation, reduces plant production based on available soil nutrients and allocates new C, N, and P to the different live plant compartments. The monthly soil water flow model calculates water balance, soil water storage, soil water drainage and stream flow, while monthly average soil temperature is calculated as a function of aboveground plant biomass. Monthly precipitation, stored soil water, and soil temperature control the rate of decomposition of the soil organic matter pools and the release of nutrients from the SOM pools. The soil organic matter submodel simulates the dynamics of carbon and soil nutrients for the different SOM pools. Decomposition of the SOM pools results in the release of soil nutrients from the SOM pools which is then available for plant uptake. Dead plant material from the plant production submodel flows into the surface and belowground litter pools, which are inputs to the SOM model. 2 CENTURY Tutorial January 2001 3 CENTURY Tutorial January 2001 1.3. Soil Organic Matter Model The soil organic matter model simulates SOM dynamics for soil active, slow and passive pools, while dead litter material is represented using aboveground and belowground structural and metabolic pools (Figure 1-2).
The active pool (approximately 2% of the total SOM pool) includes soil microbes and microbial products with short turnover times (1-3 months). The slow SOM pool (45 to 60% of total soil SOM) includes resistant plant material derived from structural plant material and stabilized soil microbial products that have turnover times ranging from 10 to 50 years depending on the climate. The passive pool (45 to 50% of total SOM) includes physically and chemically stabilized SOM that is very resistant to decomposition (turnover times from 400 to 4000 years). The structural material includes cellulose, hemi-cellulose and lignin fraction of plant material (resistant to decomposition), while the metabolic material is readily decomposable. Plant litter material is split into structural and metabolic material as a function of the lignin to nitrogen ratio (L:N) of the litter (more structural with higher L:N ratios). The CENTURY model assumes that decomposition of plant residues and the SOM pools is microbially-mediated with an associated microbial respiration CO2 loss. Microbial respiration losses from decomposition of active SOM increase with the soil sand content (from 30 to 80% as sand content increases to 90%), while microbial respiration losses are approximately 50% for decomposition of all of the other litter and SOM pools. Each of the litter and soil SOM pools have pool specific maximum decomposition rates with the maximum rate being reduced by an abiotic soil decomposition factor that is controlled by the soil moisture and soil temperature (Figure 1-3). The soil temperature function increases exponentially with increasing temperature, while the soil moisture function increases as the ratio of stored water plus current rainfall to potential evapotranspiration increases (the curve is most sensitive to changes in the ratio below 0.6).
Both submodels assume that monthly maximum production is controlled by soil moisture and temperature with maximum rates decreased if soil nutrients supply is insufficient (the most limiting nutrient controls production). Plant nutrient uptake is a function of live root biomass with uptake increasing as live root biomass increases up to 300 grams per square meter. A complete description of the parameterization of the model for different plant systems and the use of the different management option is presented in the CENTURY User Manual (Metherell et al. 1994). 12 CENTURY Tutorial January 2001 13 CENTURY Tutorial January 2001 14 CENTURY Tutorial January 2001 1.6. Use and Testing of the CENTURY Model Extensive data sets from long-term agricultural experiments and grasslands have been used to test the CENTURY model. We used the observed data to test the model and as a tool for integrating and interpreting the data sets. Plant production and soils data from extensive tropical and temperate grasslands around the world (Parton et al. 1993, Gilmanov et al. 1998) show that the model correctly simulated the effects of burning, irrigation, fertilization, and grazing on plant production and the seasonal patterns for live and dead biomass. The model has been used to simulate the long-term (30-60 year) dynamics of soil organic matter and plant production for corn, winter and spring wheat systems in Australia (Carter et al. 1993, Probert et al. 1997), Canada (Liang et al. 1996), Sweden (Paustian et al. 1992), and sites in Oregon and Nebraska (Metherell et al. 1994, Parton and Rasmussen 1994). The grassland model has been used to simulate the impact of climate change and increased atmospheric CO2 levels on grasslands around the world (Parton et al. 1995) with a detailed analysis for the US Great Plains region (Burke et al. 1991, Schimel et al. 1990).
The combined effect of future environmental change and improved land use practices on soil carbon storage and plant production has been evaluated for the US Corn Belt (Donigian et al. 1995), while Paustian et al. (1996) have used CENTURY to evaluate soil carbon storage in the US resulting from the conservation reserve program. The model has also been used to simulate ecosystem dynamics at the 0.5 x 0.5 degree scale for global ecosystems (Schimel et al. 1996). We are currently developing a daily version of the model (Parton et al. 1998) which simulates all of the ecosystem dynamics using more mechanistic soil water and temperature submodels and also simulates daily trace gas fluxes (N2O, N2, NOx and CH4). 15 CENTURY Tutorial January 2001 1.7. DAYCENT Model Description DAYCENT (Parton et al. 1998, DelGrosso et al. 2001, Kelly et al. 2000) is the daily time step version of the CENTURY ecosystem model. Simulation of trace gas fluxes through soils requires finer time scale resolution because a large proportion of total gas fluxes are often the result of short term rainfall, snow melt or irrigation events and the processes that result in trace gas emissions often respond non-linerly to changes in soil water levels. DAYCENT and CENTURY both simulate exchanges of carbon and the nutrients nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) among the atmosphere, soil, and plants and use identical files to simulate plant growth and events such as fire, grazing, cultivation, harvest, and organic matter or fertilizer additions. In addition to modeling decomposition, nutrient flow, soil water and soil temperature on a finer time scale than CENTURY, DAYCENT also uses increased spatial resolution for soil layers. DAYCENT includes submodels for plant productivity, decomposition of dead plant material and SOM, soil water and temperature dynamics, and trace gas fluxes (Figure 1-9). 16 CENTURY Tutorial January 2001 17 CENTURY Tutorial January 2001 2.
Downloading and Installing the PC Version of CENTURY The PC standalone version of the CENTURY model and a Windows Help file version of the CENTURY manual can be downloaded from the CENTURY homepage: using a browser application such as Internet Explorer or Netscape. Select the Download PC Century button on the CENTURY homepage. This will take you to an ftp download site where you will see the files cent40.exe and README. To download the files right click on the file icon and select the Copy to Folder option from the popup menu to save the file on your system. Or you can download the PC standalone version of the CENTURY model and the CENTURY manual via anonymous ftp. Use the cd command to change to the directory into which you wish to download the downloaded files. Once you have located the cent40.exe file select the Run button to start the installation process and follow the instructions on the screen. The README file can be viewed using Windows Notepad and contains additional information about the installation file. Do not include an extension on the name. For example, if you want to run the c3grs.sch schedule file and store the results in a file named test.bin you would enter the following at the command line: century -s c3grs -n test The installation also includes two Windows Help files. CENTURY, Associated Files, and Utility Programs The CENTURY environment (Figure 3-1) consists of the CENTURY model and three utility programs, FILE100, EVENT100, and LIST100. The FILE100 program assists the user in creating and updating any of the twelve data files used by CENTURY. The EVENT100 program creates the scheduling file which contains the vegetation types and events that are to occur during the simulation.
The LIST100 program extracts selected output variables from the CENTURY binary output file and creates an ASCII listing of the variables values for the output intervals specified in the schedule file. This listing can be viewed using any text editor or imported into a spreadsheet application for examination and graphing. The CENTURY model obtains input values by reading up to twelve data files. Each file contains a certain subset of variables; for example, the cult.100 file contains the values related to cultivation. Within each file there may be multiple options in which the parameters are defined for multiple variations of the event. For example, within the cult.100 file, there may be several cultivation options defined such as plowing or rodweeder. For each option, the parameters are defined to simulate that particular option. These files can be updated and new options created through the FILE100 program. The files crop.100, cult.100, fert.100, fire.100, graz.100, harv.100, irri.100, omad.100, tree.100, and trem.100 can have one or many options in the file. The option from the file that will be used in your model run depends on the option abbreviation used in the schedule file. The CENTURY Parameterization Workbook is a supplement to the CENTURY User’s Manual. The workbook is designed to lead you through the full parameterization of CENTURY for a particular site, adjusting the appropriate parameters that control short-term and long-term behavior. The goal is to help you work through the maze of parameters and understand how they can be estimated from real-world data. You can modify the input parameter values for a given curve, for example the temperature growth curve, and see how the parameter values you have selected effect the shape of the curve as computed by the CENTURY model. 24 CENTURY Tutorial January 2001 Decide what types of events you want to simulate. For example, do you want to include fire in your simulation of the system. Is the system tilled.
Do you want to simulate grazing. What type of harvest is conducted. How many cm of water are added through irrigation. How much and what type of organic amendment is added (manure, fish meal, green manure). Is your system flooded at any point during the year? Etc. Now decide the order and duration of the events and create a schedule file for your simulation. 25 CENTURY Tutorial January 2001 5. Running CENTURY and its Utility Programs The PC version of CENTURY and its utility programs must be run from a DOS box in Windows 9x or Windows NT. Use the cd command to change to the directory where you CENTURY files are located. For example, when you open the DOS box you will most likely be in the Windows directory and the DOS prompt will show C:\WINDOWS, to change to the root directory enter the following command at the DOS prompt: cd. You should now be in the root directory. In most cases the DOS prompt should now read C:\. If you used the default CENTURY installation the CENTURY files will be in the C:\century directory. To get to the CENTURY directory enter this command at the DOS prompt: cd century If the command has executed successfully the DOS prompt will show C:\CENTURY. Use the dir command ensure that you are in the correct directory. This utility also provides parameter definitions, units, and valid values or ranges. To run FILE100 enter: file100 and follow the on screen menus. Adding an option will allow the user to choose an existing option to copy, and then allow the user to enter a new abbreviation and new values for the new option. Changing an option will allow the user to change the abbreviation or any of the values associated with that option. Deleting an option will completely remove the option from the.100 file. Also, since the English version has a little more volume of text that the Japanese version, the English version is likely to have a page break if the corresponding text in the Japanese version runs to the bottom of the page. A page break may result for the same reason if any description is added in a revision. Taking this factor into account, the page layout was designed so each page has as large a space as possible at the bottom of the page. These items are all specified as a style on the DTP tool and produced on the basis of its template. This style has achieved the readability of paper documents and has high visibility on a CRT. The layout example of a manual body produced in consideration of these design items is shown in Figure 3. The interface provides especially easy access to the desired information when referring to detailed information about the engineering item from the window for performing engineering work.
